I was very moved by the book The Sacred Romance by Brent Curtis and John Eldredge. The poem below was written just after reading the book and was inspired by it.
Transcendence
Haunting, airy music.
Blue skies, soft white clouds, a gentle breeze
Caressing the verdant rolling hills.
Songbirds calling in the meadow
Breaking the terrestrial silence.
A child's laughter and uninhibited frolick.
A long-haired feline purring contentedly on one's lap.
The majestic beauty of horses running with the wind.
The comfort and authenticity of soulmate connections.
Stories of love gained and lost
Of callings found and lives lived deeply.
Provocative passages from the book divine
Sorrow of separation, Hope in redemption.
Beautiful voices joined in songs of praise.
Moments in time, cherished.
A conscious awareness
that our aching hearts are full.
And, for a time,
Our souls are beckoned to something deeper.
An invitation to the Sacred Romance.
Transcendence to a higher mode of living and being.
Tears of reverence and joy of the unspeakable beauty unfolding.
Wings to heaven to touch the feet of God.
Devastating and Beautiful
And ever so fleeting.
Grasping in vain, we struggle to hold on
As to a lifeline in a tempest tossed.
Torn from us
Torn from a place deep within us.
A passion so fierce as to overtake
Even the most sublime.
To know that we are truly alive
And bound for greater glory than this.
A call to arms
To something greater than ourselves.
A risk yet to be taken
A path less traveled by
Yet to be walked.
Ah, but gives us wings of eagles
So that we will not weary
When we run with men and horses.
Wings to rise up to meet You
unfettered by the world's clinging grasp.
Where sorrow dies and hope is born anew.
Wings to heaven to touch the feet of God!
As the tenuous line breaks
I drift back down to earth.
Let me always remember how to find You
Seeing You in the Beauty that remains.
The Goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Let me keep my soul awakened and always longing.
For the Great Romancer
To call me once again to heights of glory.
And never let me stay too long on common ground
For I was born to higher things.
